🍽️ FEED FAMILIES. FIGHT WASTE THIS HOLIDAY! ✨

As the cost of living crisis continues, more people in our community are facing hunger and food insecurity than ever before.

In October 2024, Merton's Community Fridge saw a record number of 1,061 visits and this year alone, we’ve saved over 52,500 kg of food from going to waste - equivalent to over 127,000 meals!

BUT THE FUTURE OF THE FRIDGE IS UNCERTAIN. With demand increasing, financial resources are now critically low and funding for the Fridge is not guaranteed after March 2025. Without YOUR SUPPORT, Merton’s Community Fridge cannot continue to be the lifeline that so many have come to depend on.

💚 PLEASE DONATE TODAY to share the gift of food and hope with those who need it most!

✨ Every £1 you give fights hunger, stops food waste and helps feed 250 families every month!
✨ With your support, Merton’s Community Fridge can continue to be the largest provider of unconditional food support in the the borough.
✨ Donating £30 will help feed 30 families for a whole month!

What is a Community Fridge?

Each year in the UK we throw away nearly 15 million tonnes of food and drink. Nearly half of this is perfectly good to consume!

Merton’s Community Fridge is a long-term initiative to tackle food poverty and reduce food waste in the borough. It's essentially a big fridge where fresh surplus food is donated and redistributed to the community. Our Community Fridge is the first in Merton, but we have some ‘cool’ neighbours in Brixton (the first community fridge in London) and Camberwell.

During this time of food crisis, Merton's Community Fridge is directly aiding those living in isolation and/or food poverty, made possible by the support of local volunteers and key partners, including Morden Baptist Church. We receive food from FareSharethe UK’s longest running food redistribution charity, local supermarkets and food growers, and from residents too. It's all about giving and sharing!

Why do we need community fridges?

Prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, food poverty in Merton was already on the rise. Between 2015-2017, the number of residents accessing local food banks increased by 33%. The pandemic has escalated the food crisis and created a situation where many more people in Merton are struggling to buy or access food. At the same time, a huge amount of good food continues to go to waste, which is a big problem for communities and the planet.

We know that many businesses and residents would donate good quality but unwanted fresh food if they had the opportunity. Merton's Community Fridge, and the wider Merton's Community Fridge Network, provides this essential link, ensuring that surplus food is kept out of the bin and given to those who will make good use of it.
